Lyricist Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne created that wonderful Christmas song in 1945, when I was 1 year old. I was singing along with it last week in the car, as winter finally arrived after staying away through November. “Hunters can expect a season similar to 2008,” says Warnke. “Preliminary indications are that fawn production is about the same as it was last year and remains below the long term average. Indices to fawn production were up in some areas and down in others, but on the whole very similar to last year. Winter severity was moderate and herd growth will vary with varying fawn production. Deer numbers will vary by region and even unit. Units in the far northeast are below population goals and DNR has taken steps to bring deer numbers up in those units. In others, populations remain above goal and herd control seasons are in place for 2009.”

Accordingly, one change hunters in the northern and central forests will notice is many deer management units will be “regular” units in 2009 after many successive seasons of herd control or earn-a-buck. Hunters in DMUs designated as regular units by deer managers, will find limits on the number of antlerless deer hunters will be able to harvest.

And, earn-a-buck, a population management tool that requires hunters to first shoot an antlerless deer before shooting a buck, has been suspended while effective alternatives are considered everywhere except in Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Management Zone.

Jackson County and the Black River State Forest offer over 200,000 acres of public land for the sports person. Many species of game exist on the forest including whitetail deer, turkeys, grouse, black bear and several species of waterfowl.
The forest is dominated by early successional species such as aspen, oak and jack pine creating ideal habitat for local game populations.

Black River State Forest – The all-terrain vehicle trail system was groomed one week ago and is in good condition. This will be the last grooming cycle for this season. All ATV trails will close on Oct. 15. The section of ATV trail from Campground Road to the Clay School parking lot is temporarily closed again due to excessive water on the trails and riders going off trail to avoid these sections. During this time of closure a temporary route has been authorized with the Town of Komensky, Please ride with the utmost respect on this new route. ATVs must stay on the roadway at all times and be mindful of speed. Work is complete on upgrading the wetland crossings on a 1.1-mile section of trail from Wildcat Road heading west. There is some top dressing to be done on the crossings; this work will be done the week after the trails close for the season. As soon as we receive the necessary wetland permits we will begin work on the section that is now temporarily closed. Four fatal ATV accidents have occurred on the Jackson and Clark county trail systems this summer. These are unfortunate reminders of the need to practice safe riding at all times. All campgrounds are open for the rest of the season on a first come first served basis. Getting a site this time of year is very easy even on weekends
