Five Jackson County Women Honored

These area ladies remind us that we can make a difference in our communities.  Story by Cassandra Colson Jackson County Chronicle.
Five Jackson County women were honored last week as the newest recipients of the county’s Women in History awards.

Local residents Joan Brown, Carolyne Hensel, Lila Lynne, Leota Simonson and Dorothy Will received the awards at a ceremony held March 20.

The program began after a former president of the local AARP brought information on National Women in History month to a meeting of Seniors and Lawmen Together, and the groups began co-sponsoring the program. Recipients must be over 60 years old, county residents and show leadership within their communities and county.

Black River Falls and the Civil War

Wisconsin was barely a state at the start of the Civil War. One Black River Falls High School Senior spent some time researching and discovered how his community was involved as part of the high school Falls History Project.

From the Jackson County Chronicle: Levi Miles more readily enjoys studying world history. But after the past four months of researching the role of Black River Falls men in the Civil War, he says he’s learned the value of Jackson County’s role in an important slice of United States history.
“It’s just really, really neat,” said Miles, a Black River Falls High School senior. “Considering the time period (and our) far-north town, we had people fighting in the Civil War."
